Huge Sinkhole Forms Overnight in Florida, Home Evacuated - May 3, 2012

sheilaaliens.net Windermere, FL - "An enormous and still-growing sinkhole that has led a family to evacuate their Florida home is now inching closer toward swallowing their house, raising concern among neighbors that they will also have to flee the area. The Lambro family awoke Thursday morning to find their Windmere, Fla., backyard gone. The sinkhole, which has already swallowed four trees and a hammock, has now grown to at least 100 feet wide and 50 feet deep. "It's scary to even think about it," Lou Lambro said. "When we got outside, it was just dropping into the hole. It looked like an avalanche in some ways. I'd said, 'It would be nice to have a pool, it's such a pretty view back there,' but I didn't want this. That's a little too deep." Sinkholes occur when ground water builds up and dissolves minerals into the earth, creating a hole underground that eventually becomes so large that the land on top caves in. Sinkholes have been known to run more than 100 feet deep. Large sinkholes have been a disruptive menace across North America in the past decade. In 2009, a Dallas sinkhole spread 600 feet wide, swallowing trailers, oil equipment and telephone poles. Another sinkhole in Deltona, Fla., in 2004 devoured homes in its path, stretching to 225 feet. The same year in Baltimore, a mother and daughter driving to the mall ended up in a 20-foot sinkhole. They were lucky to survive. Florida Mother Shoots and Kills Four Children and Herself

A mother shot and killed her four children before turning a gun on herself in a small town in Florida on Tuesday (May 15), authorities said. The shooting happened at a house in Port St. John, in Brevard County, about 15 miles from NASA's Kennedy Space Center. A spokesman for the Brevard County Sheriff's office identified the victims as four children aged 12, 13, 15 and 17. They were shot by their 33-year-old mother, Tonya Thomas, who then turned the gun on herself, Tod Goodyear said. All were shot with what appeared to be a handgun. Goodyear said a neighbor called police before dawn on Tuesday to report gunfire. When police arrived they found a fatally injured 17-year-old girl in the front yard of the house, which is in a quiet neighborhood of single family residences. More shots were heard inside the house as a SWAT team arrived and entered through a back entrance. A neighbor told police that three of the children had banged on his door shortly before 5 am, Goodyear said. Tonya Thomas then appeared at the neighbor's door and ordered the children to return home. Goodyear said police had been called to the house on several occasions in the past and the 15-year-old child, a boy, was arrested last month for domestic violence against his mother. Thomas's husband, the father of all of the children, moved out of the house a few months ago, he added.
